Graduate Program

The Department of Agricultural Science and Plant Protection is a comprehensive department offering several graduate degrees. Students can receive the following graduate degrees with a concentration in either entomology or plant pathology.

Master of Agriculture in Agriculture (Non-Thesis):

Students will complete 30 credit hours of graduate courses. Students will participate in a research project and complete a scholarly activity (such as a presentation or publication) focused in a subject area. The courses required are determined by the student’s advisory committee based on the student’s background and interests. Students in this program are not eligible for research assistantships.

Master of Science in Agricultural Life Sciences (Thesis)

Students will complete 24 credit hours of graduate coursework plus 6 credit hours of research. The courses required are determined by the student’s advisory committee based on the student’s background and interests. The student’s research will be documented with a written thesis. The student must pass their oral thesis defense and submit a thesis approved by their advisory committee to the library to graduate. Full-time students are generally supported with a research assistantship that requires students to work up to 20 hours per week on research projects for their major professor.

Doctor of Philosophy in Life Sciences:

Students will complete 40 credit hours of coursework above the baccalaureate degree plus 20 credit hours of research. The courses required are determined by the student’s advisory committee based on the student’s background and interests. The student’s research will be documented with a written dissertation. The student must pass written and oral preliminary examinations. The student must also pass an oral defense of their dissertation and submit a dissertation approved by their advisory committee to the library to graduate. Full-time students are generally supported with a research assistantship that requires students to work up to 20 hrs/wk on research projects for their major professor.
